ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Army veteran Gage Hampton is being hailed a hero for rescuing a toddler from an Asheville car wreck Friday.
“I just want to give back to the community, you know. I just feel like it’s the right thing to do, just kind of my nature, just to help other people,” Hampton said.
It may be in his nature, but it’s not that simple. There’s more to why Hampton may not have wanted to come forward to claim credit. There have been some tough times for Hampton, something many veterans of war go through.
“Now, I’m two years, five months sober, and it’s all thanks to the Veterans Treatment Court and my support network,” he said.
